Twitter for Beginners

I said recently that I became addicted to Twitter and it still continues. Why? Because it’s new for me and I like meeting with interesting people from all around the world.

Even it’s very popular, only one my friends use Twitter and she didn’t even began to tweet.

Twitter is different from every tool that we’ve used before and it’s simply hard do get it at first. Especially when you’ve opened a new account with no followers and no one to follow, you go to your home page and there you think: “What should I do now? Where’s the action? Where’s everybody? I don’t get it.”

Yes, there’s no point of using Twitter without followers and someone to follow. It’s like trying to party alone while you were invited to a great one next door. If you choose not to join, you won’t get it.

I’ll list a few of my observations, like DO’s and DON’Ts for Twitter newbies:

Don’t engage with “Find 400 followers in one day” applications. They tweet on your behalf the same messsage over and over again and you may be considered as a spammer and loose your followers.Personally I’d choose 50 human, nice followers instead of 500 serial link sharing, continuously spam tweeting people. If you already did this and gave your permission to a 3rd party application, go to Settings and then Connections. If it’s there Revoke Access and change your password.

I like to call as “Human” followers people that shares only his/her blog, personal life, shop’s links and / or other interesting links in a normal, random way. I would like more of this people.

Don’t put too many tweets at once. Personally I don’t like it and it looks like you use a bot or program for scheduled tweets and makes you look like spammer. I de-follow people who puts 15 link sharing tweets at once or in a very frequent manner.

Like in the example of partying alone, tweeting by your self is not the right way of using Twitter. You should socialize with and be nice to other people who mentions your name, re-tweets you, promotes your site, shows you follow friday love or laughs at your joke etc. Public timeline page is full of a zillion tweets. For being able to track these personal tweets you should use the @yourusername link under Home at the right sidebar. Here you can see the people who’ve mentioned you and respond to them. Don’t ever neglect people who cared about you and said to get well soon when you tweeted about your sickness! I don’t like people who ignore me for any reasonĀ  and I de-follow them in the next days. If you use Twitter do it the right way.

Come Find Me at Etsy Storque

Recently I was thinking and writing about how different are Metric system and U.S. customary units. I think it’s very important especially if you run an online shop and sell worldwide.

I’ve been shopping on Etsy for years and generally I had to convert myself the measurements for the item I was browsing. But lately I notice that more and more sellers began to indicate item measurements in both systems. I did this way, too. I didn’t want visitors go find an online conversion site to calculate themselves.

Last week I red an amazing article on Etsy’s blog Storque. It was written in 5 languages and I had to translate into Turkish! When I told about it to Site Admin Vanessa she liked the idea too and voila! My translation was on Storque! Check it out and have fun!

Addicted to Twitter

I took my Twitter account a while ago, but I began to use it only recently. If I knew that I became addicted I would have think again before jumping in.

I think it was my second night in Twitter lands. I mean the night that Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson died. It was historical. In some events I think that I bear witness to it. That night was just like that. I was already sad by the death of FF, later came rumors about MJ. The earth was shocked. Nobody could believe it. I was checking TV’s and newspapers and they were all empty.

That night I began to follow the news on Twitter. I mean if the aliens come and invade earth I’m sure that somebody will make time for twitting it.

Setting up a new shop

Ok, everyone knows that finally I opened my first shop and it’s for my handmade amigurumi (crochet) toys. I must be crazy after all that chaos but yep! Here I am thinking, planning, searching, working on a new shop and it’s about my jewelry this time!

Untill last week, I only had difficulties with photographing my pieces. Since the first shop was about crochet toys I didn’t have much trouble about the “Descriptions” part. But, when I began to my preparations about jewelry shop I had series of cramps with the descriptions.

I red a lot about online shops and I know that measurements differ from U.S. to Europe. So I used online conversion websites to indicate them and it was easy for the toys. You need to tell the lenght in both inches and metric system and the visitors get the idea about the toy.

When it comes to jewelry pieces which consist of different sized small materials it’s hard for someone to visualize the piece even when you give the lenght.

Considering this, I began to write a description text for each of my jewelry pieces and guess what, I found myself measuring 0.9mm (0.6″) beads like a crazy person!!! The text became an undecipherable thing full of brackets and chaos won.

Of course I’m gonna give detailed measurements in both systems about general dimensions but I don’t want to measure every tiny bead in a necklace!

Then, I started thinking about alternatives. I noticed that a lot of sellers use coins to indicate measures and give a sense of dimension in their photos. But I eliminated coin way right away because honestly I don’t know how big or small is a nickel or other coins. I think that it can only work locally. I bought a metal ruler last year, indicates both inch and cm. I thought about using it but even if it’s not very long it might not be a very good idea for every item.

Thinking about a commonly used item in most of the world I found one: Batteries! At least I know that it is used in U.S. and in Europe and for other countries I’ ll just have to wait for feedbacks.

I’m gonna do some trial shots with AA batteries, the most used size (thinner ones are called AAA).
